Future of Work 2025: Australian Outlook

January 22, 2025

What does 2025 hold for Aussie companies and candidates? A strong labour market, the imperative for continuous learning, and economic tailwinds ramping up hiring.

A strong labour market in 2025 with high participation rates

The labour market is still characterised by solid participation rates at 67.2 per cent (Dec 2024) indicating that many Australians continue to enter or rejoin the workforce. This robust participation reflects confidence in employment opportunities and highlights the resilience of the Australian economy, despite the challenges faced in 2024.

As applications per job ad rose 3.4 per cent, the largest increase since April 2024, employers will continue to encounter the challenge of attracting and retaining skilled talent well into 2025. Sectors like healthcare, construction, manufacturing and renewable energy are expected to experience heightened competition for top candidates, necessitating strategic hiring practices.

In response to these challenges, many organisations will need to turn to recruitment agencies in 2025 for assistance in navigating the complexities of the talent market. Engaging with specialised recruiters allows companies to identify and secure candidates with the necessary skills and qualifications to thrive in an evolving economic landscape.

The imperative for continuous learning and timeless skills

The World Economic Forum has projected that by 2025, half of the global workforce will require substantial reskilling or upskilling. This shift responds to the rapid evolution of job roles across various industries, where traditional skills are becoming obsolete while new competencies emerge.

Employers now prioritise skills and potential over traditional measures like job tenure or formal education. Core skills such as emotional intelligence, creativity and the ability to communicate cross-culturally and cross-generationally will be expected norms as workplace teams become more diverse. Importantly, digital literacy and data analytics will be earmarked as critical for job applicants this year, with LinkedIn reporting analysis as one of the most in-demand skills for the future workforce.

Organisations that foster a culture of continuous learning empower their employees to navigate changes effectively, ensuring they remain relevant and competitive. Conversely, those who pay attention to this imperative risk falling behind and will not succeed in an increasingly competitive job market.

Economic tailwinds breathe new life into 2025 hiring

Australia’s economic outlook is expected to improve gradually in 2025, after a period of subdued growth in 2024. The main factors affecting the outlook are easing inflation, lower interest rates, and a gradual improvement in household consumption. Throughout 2024, the Australian economy struggled with sticky inflation though it now shows signs of easing. However, in 2025, the economy is expected to benefit from rising real household incomes as a result of 2 per cent economic growth and the Reserve Bank cutting interest rates.

Manufacturing, transport and logistics roles in Australia comprise 10 per cent of total jobs advertised (11,346), the second largest source of employment nationally.

While public sector jobs will be slashed amid the May 2025 election, employment in the private sector will lead the charge in terms of vacancies. Manufacturing, transport and logistics roles in Australia comprise 10 per cent of total jobs advertised (11,346), the second largest source of employment nationally. Manufacturing has been responsible for a large share of employment growth over the last decade, and this will continue in 2025. As cost-of-living pressures are expected to ease and potential interest rate cuts weigh in the balance, the demand for workers in key sectors such as manufacturing, construction and engineering will continue to soar, inciting renewed optimism in 2025.
